Into the Woods

Mabyn Mossback is Welsh. Like all Welsh people she is descended from the Celtic tribes which existed in Great Britain before the Romans came, before the Anglo-Saxons, before the Vikings, and before the Norman Conquest.

I love Wales and Welsh culture. I tried to do it justice with this witch of 'Good Witches Bad Witches™'. You can read more about her and see the concept art as I developed her character design in a post about her here.

Today she took her ram-led cart (which is carved with Welsh dragons in a Welsh love-spoon style) into this misty forest I created. On the back of her cart are her provisions including woolen clothing, leeks, potions and bones. She wears a type of Welsh stovepipe hat and colors of the Welsh flag. A Welsh mining lamp lights her way (I put a tiny bulb in there and the amber glow it casts is real). She is of course in one inch miniature scale and conceived, designed, hand-sculpted and photographed by me. ;)

If you follow Tall Tales Productions on Instagram you may have seen my live broadcast as I photographed and filmed her in this magical setting. The video was live and disappeared moments later, but if you caught it you might have also caught me accidentally turning the camera on myself whilst attempting to end the video(!!!) Still learning this Instagram live video thing...

Enjoy the photos.

And also, update on Hortense....! If you follow the Facebook page then you'll know that the countdown has begun! I get the prototype back very soon, and after I hand-paint it, I'll photograph her and start accepting pre-sales! It should be by the weekend...

Stay tuned and don't forget you can also subscribe to the newsletter (here) if you want updates such as these.

Rare Welsh Bits...

A little while back I wrote about my design process for the character Mabyn Mossback, who is the Welsh witch from Good Witches Bad Witches and also the latest character addition. You can see the post here.

Finally, here she is!

Mabyn Mossback is a 1:12 character sculpt - handmade by myself using clay, wire and mixed media. She'd be about 5 foot (5 inches) if she stood upright. Mabyn dresses in old fashioned Welsh attire complete with red wool shawl, green knit open finger gloves and a Welsh stovepipe hat. Her cart is carved like a wooden love spoon (again, read more about the design here) and there are dragons carved into the cart - a tribute to the national emblem for Wales - the dragon. Finally, Mabyn's cart is pulled by a black ram with a copper cattle bell around his neck.

I added a flickering light to this piece, just like the lantern I made for Captain James Hook here. This lamp is a Welsh miners' lamp. They're amazing objects, don't you think? Growing up back in my English village, we had a brass Welsh miners' lamp hanging in the kitchen and it gave such a wonderful glow.

Enjoy the photos of Mabyn below! As with all my witches you'll be able to learn a lot more about them and see more working photos in my book - out later this year. Explanation as to why the book is delayed is here.

What's in a Name?

"What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet..."
~ William Shakespeare; 'Romeo and Juliet'

It's about time you (those of you that have followed the project Good Witches Bad Witches  for any length of time) learnt the names of the witches you've come to know. I spent the weekend sketching various witches (actually I managed six over the two days) and if you follow the new Tall Tales Productions Instagram account you may have caught the video (here) of me drawing one. Note - I've had an Instagram account for almost two years, but often used it for personal photos, so it was about time I set up this company Instagram account.

You can now find the official Tall Tales Productions Instagram account here, and follow it to see any behind the scenes work, finished work, videos, tutorials... basically anything created within Tall Tales. Expect to see more artwork, sculpting, witches, books, miniature models and even miniature food. I wont use this account to post anything which is not business related.

You can also follow the dedicated Good Witches Bad Witches  Instagram account here. This will not be behind the scenes about how the project is made, but instead it will be finished shots and you can learn more about the characters themselves, not the technicalities of how they were created.

You can continue to follow my personal Instagram account here if you like!

So...

The names!

From left to right (on the above line up), we have Olga, Mildred, Falka, Eris, Drusilla and Marla. See sketches below... more to come soon.

Brilliant People

The great Austrian-born filmmaker Billy Wilder once said "The Austrians are brilliant people. They made the world believe that Hitler was a German and Beethoven an Austrian."

On making another European witch - an Austrian this time, I was thinking about how much I loved my trip to Vienna when I was 6 or 7 years old. What a magical place. Plus I just happen to think that the German language is the most attractive, fantastic sounding language. Yes, I know, German is spoken a little differently there, but it's still German, and I love it. ;)

This witch came together very quickly because I'd already designed her and had her clearly in my mind ages ago when I did the witch illustration. Can you point her out?! Unlike most of my character designs which try to embody as much of that culture as possible, this one is a little more vague. I've made her tall, strong, authoritarian, confident and with a big red almost beehive hairstyle. Her Edwardian brooch has a skull on it and she wears stripes. Her 'familiar' (witch's pet) is a black Great Dane. I photographed her next to a can of Red Bull because it's an Austrian drink, created by an Austrian entrepreneur! Didn't know that now did you?! (I didn't either until 2 weeks ago).

I usually share many work-in-progress photos so that you can see how she was created, but this time I am holding some back... partly for this reason! Rest assured, you'll see so much more in my upcoming book. Hope that doesn't cause any disappointment and that you enjoy these photos below.

Don't forget, you can see all my characters from my project - Good Witches Bad Witches ™  here!

In other news....

Flown up front with my pilot friend in his Cirrus back to San Francisco again! See the exciting night landing here!

The US election happened earlier this week, which meant that as a Greencard-holding resident here in the US I could observe the election, but not vote. I went to the polling booth here in Los Feliz, Los Angeles, and was thrilled to be invited inside for a minute or two and shown how the machines worked.

And also Halloween, my favourite time of year has come and gone, and I shared a post about what I got up to here.

On work related matters, stay tuned (that means keep checking in on at the Facebook page and Instagram) to see more of the exciting sets I am building for Good Witches Bad Witches  ....!

Please scroll past the note for my Austrian friends to see photos of the new witch - the Austrian Witch (die österreichische hexe)!

Liebe Freunde in Österreich,

Vielen Dank!
